JANUARY 3, 2020 — Editor’s note: Two rankings reveal UTSA’s success in its effort to become one of the top global research universities. [First published Sept. 25, 2019]
In one year The University of Texas at San Antonio moved up significantly in two prestigious reports that rank universities on national and world stages. Both rankings reveal UTSA’s success in its effort to become one of the top global research universities.
UTSA made huge strides in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, moving up 20 places among U.S. universities from 124 to 104 and rose as one of the top 500 universities in the world. To develop this global ranking Times Higher Education evaluated 1,400 universities in 92 countries.
The publication measures universities using 13 indicators for institutions’ performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. UTSA performed strongest in the area of citations—an assessment that quantifies the number of times scholarly work is cited in global publications.
In the Washington Monthly 2019 College Rankings, UTSA is recognized among the top 150 National Universities in the country, advancing 54 positions to 127th out of 395 institutions.
Washington Monthly’s rankings evaluate institutions in three categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and doctoral degrees), and service (encouraging students to give something back). UTSA advanced in the social mobility category from 176 to 170, in research from 181 to 165, and in community service from 112 to 52.
These rankings reflect UTSA’s strategic plan to reach new levels of excellence over the next 10 years.
