University announces interim police chief

Capt. Stephanie Schoenborn has been with the UTSA Police Department since 1993.

APRIL 19, 2021Capt. Stephanie Schoenborn has been named UTSA’s interim chief of police, effective immediately. Her appointment follows the selection of UTSA’s current chief, Gerald Lewis, as chief of police at the University of Connecticut. Lewis remains at UTSA through May 31 and will assist with the transition.

“With Chief Lewis’s departure on the horizon, we want to ensure Public Safety and the UTSA Police Department remain in good hands with an excellent leader,” said Veronica Salazar Mendez, chief financial officer and senior vice president for business affairs. “Captain Schoenborn brings experience and enthusiasm to this role. I ask the university community to join me in congratulating and supporting her as she guides Public Safety and the Police Department through this transition period.”

Schoenborn is a longtime Roadrunner and proud alumna, having graduated from UTSA with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration. She has been with the UTSA Police Department since 1993. She holds a Master Peace Officer license and graduated from the 238th session of the FBI National Academy.

Schoenborn served as a member of the executive board for the Texas Chapter of the National Academy Associates from June 2012 through June 2020 and was appointed president of the board in 2019. She was promoted to captain in June 2016 and has been responsible for the administrative operations of Public Safety.

A national search for a permanent replacement will begin in the coming months.
