President Eighmy provides update following governor’s order on mask mandate

President Eighmy provides update following governor’s order on mask mandate

MAY 19, 2021 — Editor’s note: The following message was sent via email today from President Taylor Eighmy to all faculty, staff and students:

Yesterday, Governor Abbott issued Executive Order GA-36, which prohibits government entities from mandating face coverings. This executive order takes effect Friday, May 21, and UTSA will comply with the governor’s executive order for the summer session and going forward. We will continue to strongly encourage the wearing of masks on our campuses, regardless of vaccination status.

Last week the CDC also released new guidelines about masks being optional for people who are vaccinated, which indicates that progress is being made in the national fight against COVID-19. We especially appreciate the recommendations of our Public Health Task Force, issued in its latest report to guide a safe campus reopening this summer. UTSA’s domestic and international travel guidelines have also been updated.

Update as of May 21, 2021: Further clarification was received regarding the Governor's face coverings executive order, and no exceptions are allowed for child care centers, summer camps with K-12 students, clinics or counseling centers.

We appreciate the efforts that each and every one of you have made to keep our community safe and healthy. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
