JUNE 22, 2022 — This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. § 1681), which was signed into law on June 23. The federal law prohibits discrimination based on gender in educational institutions which receive federal financial assistance—thus helping to create equal opportunities for female athletes.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary, UTSA Athletics created a series of videos in which staff and student-athletes discuss how Title IX opened doors for women's sports to grow in America, and how the law impacted them personally.
In today’s video, UTSA Women’s Basketball coach Karen Aston and UTSA Women’s Soccer coach Derek Pittman discuss Title IX’s legacy—from the vocal leaders who spurred the new law, to the responsibility we share to continue the conversations around equity in women’s sports.
