OCTOBER 21, 2022 — The UTSA Institute for Economic Development (IED) hosted the 2022 University Economic Development Association (UEDA) annual summit earlier this month in San Antonio. The summit’s goal was to exchange new ideas and learning on regional partnerships for economic growth. Attendees learned what UTSA and San Antonio are doing to strengthen the regional economy.
University of Texas System Chancellor James B. Milliken delivered the keynote address and UTSA President Taylor Eighmy delivered welcoming remarks.
“The University Economic Development Association brings a wealth of collective knowledge on how to best economically grow a region,” said Rod McSherry, UTSA associate vice president for innovation and economic development. “The Institute of Economic Development was proud to host the association in San Antonio.”
UTSA panelists and speakers included Bijo Mathew, director of the UTSA SBDC Technology Commercialization Center, Christine Burke, director of commercialization and technology transfer, and Shawn Farrell, assistant vice president for corporate and Foundation Engagement, in addition to McSherry.
They addressed how to build communities of innovation and talent in San Antonio and beyond through university research parks and innovation districts and how to grow the economy by advancing the health care and bioscience sectors.
Conference attendees toured UTSA’s new School of Data Science and its National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC) to learn about new collaborations shaping up in San Antonio’s high-tech corridor.
The UTSA School of Data Science will co-locate the university’s 70-plus faculty members in cybersecurity, cloud computing, data and analytics, and artificial intelligence under one highly collaborative roof that includes classrooms, laboratories and research space. A focus on connected classrooms and cutting-edge instructional technology will provide flexibility for course content delivery when it opens its doors to students in January.
UTSA’s NSCC is advancing research, education and workforce development in cybersecurity, data analytics and cloud computing. It is building a collaborative and impactful government-university-industry ecosystem that includes federal agencies, contracting and industry leaders, and academia to solve the nation’s greatest challenges in national security.
“The UEDA Summit strives to be an event of convergence. By convening the most innovative and economically charged institutions and organizations, we not only learned about the great things happening throughout Texas, but also supported Texas’ economic growth with new ideas shared at our conference,” said Tom Hindes, UEDA executive director.

UEDA has been working to bring together higher education institutions, private sector businesses, non-profits, government organizations, and community economic development stakeholders to create local and regional economic opportunity. Its membership includes more than 160 organizations at the leading edge of modern economic development thinking and practice.
