UTSA Giving Day 2023: Building the Nest begins next week

UTSA Giving Day 2023: Building the Nest begins next week

MARCH 31, 2023 — There are just a few days until UTSA Giving Day, which will take place on April 4 and 5, 2023. This is the third year of the signature annual fundraiser, which brings Roadrunner Nation together to celebrate connections to UTSA and to raise funds to benefit students, faculty and staff.

The goal this year is to have at least 3,000 donors making gifts that will benefit programs across UTSA’s campuses. This support keeps the university’s many outstanding educational experiences affordable for students, allowing them to make the most of their time at UTSA.

“UTSA is on an incredible trajectory to be a model of a modern research university that is committed to discovery as well as student success. Donor involvement has contributed significantly to the university’s progress,” said UTSA Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Karl Miller-Lugo. “The 2023 UTSA Giving Day will continue this momentum and ensure students and faculty have the resources to make the most of their time at UTSA.”

“The 2023 Giving Day will continue this momentum and ensure students and faculty have the resources to make the most of their time at UTSA.”

The online fundraising event will officially begin at 10:11 a.m. Central Time on Tuesday, April 4, and conclude 1,969 minutes later at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5. Participants can direct gifts to projects across the university, including all academic colleges and schools, UTSA Libraries and Museums, the Spirit of San Antonio marching band, the Roadrunner Pantry, UTSA Athletics, Student Emergency Funds, UTSA Alumni Association scholarships and more.

The effort will be tracked on the UTSA Giving Day website, which will include totals for colleges and key university programs. Leader boards on the website will highlight the colleges and programs with the greatest number of donors and dollars raised, and those units will earn additional funds. For example, the top program for dollars raised will receive an additional $5,000 thanks to longtime, generous university friends John Richardson and Jan Puckett. The program with the most unique donors will earn an additional $5,000 thanks to alumna April Ancira ’03.

Several colleges and programs are also offering donor-funded challenges. Visit the UTSA Giving Day website to see details about the challenges, including Turn the Map Orange (unlocked with a gift from all 50 U.S. states) and the Cornhole Challenge benefitting the UTSA Athletics Women’s Opportunity Fund.

Here are three other ways that supporters can get involved:

  • Register to be an official ambassador. Online ambassadors agree to share posts on social media and encourage their network to get involved by sending texts or email. In return, they can earn UTSA swag, including an exclusive Fiesta medal.

  • Share about UTSA Giving Day on social media. Participate in one of the planned social media challenges using the hashtag #BuildTheNest.

  • Plan for power hours. Power hours are periods when the program that engages the most donors will receive an additional $2,000. Participation power hours are planned for:

    • April 4: 10:11 a.m. to noon
    • April 4-5: 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
    • April 5: 6 to 8 a.m.
    • April 5: 5 to 7 p.m.

UTSA Giving Day is a high-impact opportunity to raise funds and celebrate the community.

Students like Zachary Nepote ’24 are the ultimate beneficiaries.

“As a scholarship recipient, knowing first-hand the impact of gifts on students like me, I am looking forward to seeing the results of UTSA Giving Day this year,” Nepote said. An aspiring politician from Corpus Christi, Texas, when Nepote was looking for a university, he wanted a community that was welcoming and supportive. He says he was able to find it at UTSA in part because of donor support.

“The scholarship I received makes it possible for me to focus on school and get involved on campus, because I don’t have to worry as much about paying for tuition or dues,” Nepote said. “That freedom to focus and explore opportunities, that’s the impact donors have on students through campaigns like UTSA Giving Day.”
