APRIL 21, 2023 — The UTSA Main Campus has been transformed for one of the university’s oldest and largest annual celebrations. Día en la Sombrilla brings the atmosphere of Fiesta San Antonio to the Sombrilla and Central Plazas, with fun, music and food booths benefitting student organizations.

The UTSA and San Antonio communities are invited from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for the free, family-friendly event. Formerly known as Fiesta UTSA, the annual celebration is an official event of Fiesta San Antonio.

Día en la Sombrilla will feature live music from Mariachi Nuevo Estilo and entertainment by DJ Lights Out. The event is hosted by Roadrunner Productions, a sponsored student organization focused on fostering and building traditions and community through campus-wide programs, activities and special events.

An official Fiesta event, Día en la Sombrilla features several student organizations that sell food, sashes, and other goods as an opportunity to raise money for their group.

The campus tradition, which began in 1978, continues to grow and evolve.

More than 65 registered student organizations will host booths—selling food, drinks and other items to raise funds for their student organizations. The University College is also using Día en la Sombrilla as an educational opportunity, as part of its Academic Inquiry and Scholarship curriculum. The event is serving as an experiential learning project for the students, as they create a business, sell items and measure success. The money they raise today will fund course activities for the next semester.

The Multicultural Student Center for Equity and Justice and the Dreamers Resource Center is hosting an exhibit entitled “Explore, Discover, Dream” as part of the event. The exhibit focuses on exploring and decolonizing the history of Fiesta San Antonio and highlighting the contributions of immigrants to the San Antonio community.

“It’s exciting to see the entrepreneurial spirit showcased in our student organizations said Jarvis Clark, associate director of the UTSA Office of Student Activities. “Student organizations are raising much-needed funds to amplify their efforts. Through Día en la Sombrilla, the community can contribute to the organizations’ efforts, while having a good time.”
