MAY 16, 2023 — UTSA has selected Angel Lemmonds as the next assistant chief of police, effective July 1. Lemmonds joins UTSA after serving 10 years with the UT System Office of the Director of Police (ODOP), where she served as senior inspector and was responsible for managing the background investigations program, inspection program and served as the commander for the UT System Marine Unit.
UTSA once again makes history as it becomes the first police department in the UT System to appoint two women to the chief and assistant chief positions.
As assistant chief of police, Lemmonds will be responsible for coordinating the strategic and operational objectives of the administration of the UTSA Police Department, including providing leadership and guidance and assisting the chief of police on the development and implementation of goals, policies and procedures.
She will oversee major components of the department, such as the patrol, investigations and support services divisions, which includes the telecommunications center, community affairs, internal affairs, and recruiting and hiring. Lemmonds will assume command of the police department in the absence of the chief of police.

She has experience in higher education, at academic and medical institutions, and understands the unique opportunities we have in making an impact on the success of our students and community. We are excited that she will be part of the Roadrunner community.”
Beginning her career as a public safety officer in 1994 at UT Medical Branch in Galveston, Lemmonds entered the UT System Police Academy in 1999. She later transferred in 2002 to UTHealth Houston, where she served as a patrol sergeant for 11 years. While serving the University of Texas community for more than 17 years, Lemmonds has performed various assignments within the UT System Police, including institution police departments inspections, administrative and criminal investigations, academy instructor, field training officer, crime prevention, recruiting and is currently a lead instructor for the rape aggression defense class.
Lemmonds attended the University of Houston, where she received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in business administration. She holds a master peace officer certification and a basic police instructor’s license and, in 2012, she graduated from the Texas Certified Public Manager program through Sam Houston State University.
A graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session 268), Lemmonds has completed multiple executive leadership courses, including Senior Manager Institute for Police, Session 84, and the U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection Program (2019).
Outside of her police duties, Lemmonds enjoys traveling the world and experiencing new and exciting adventures. Her recent travels include Costa Rica, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Greece, Puerto Rico and Belize.

Weather permitting, experienced astronomers will provide a handful of telescopes of varying designs, give training on how each operates, and point to various astronomical objects that may appear in the sky for that given time of the year. If you have a telescope and do not know how to operate it, feel free to bring it and get instructions on its use.
