OCTOBER 30, 2023 — In the lead-up to their highly anticipated football clash on Saturday, November 4, the University of North Texas (UNT) Mean Green has challenged the UTSA Roadrunners to a spirited 'Battle of the Birds' fundraising challenge. While their football rivalry is often fierce, this challenge unites the two universities in a common goal: supporting students in need.
Named in honor of the universities’ avian mascots, the victor of this Battle of the Birds will secure more than just the right to crow about their achievement. The school that rallies the most donors will unlock a $10,000 bonus to support students in need, and at UTSA it will be directed to the Roadrunner Pantry.
The competition will run until November 4 at BattleoftheBirds.com. Supporters can direct their gifts to any area of the university they wish to contribute to, be it a specific college or school, the libraries, athletics, or their favorite program.
“Battle of the Birds is not only about which feathered mascot reigns supreme; it's about the collective power of giving back and making a lasting impact,” said Karl Miller-Lugo, UTSA vice president for advancement and alumni engagement. “When my counterpart at UNT offered this challenge, I thought this would be a unique way to encourage support for the university, and especially for the Roadrunner Pantry. I look forward to seeing the results because I know Roadrunner Nation is competitive when it comes to the success of their university.”
Every gift, regardless of the amount, will help secure the victory in this Battle of the Birds. Donors contributing $35 or more to any area will receive a UTSA bucket hat as a token of appreciation, while supplies last.
Each year, thousands of students visit the Roadrunner Pantry to acquire nutritious food and personal care items.
“Unlocking the $10,000 bonus will be a lifeline for the Roadrunner Pantry, ensuring it can continue its mission to provide food for students throughout the year,” said Nikki Lee, senior associate director of the Student Union, who oversees the pantry. “With finals just around the corner, this boost could have an immediate impact, allowing students to focus more on their studies and less on where their next meal is coming from.”
No matter which team emerges victorious on the football field, it's clear that students are the ultimate winners in this Battle of the Birds fundraising challenge. By contributing to Team UTSA, supporters not only help their favorite university secure bragging rights but also make a real difference in the lives of today’s Roadrunners.
