APRIL 12, 2023 — Roadrunners looking for some healthy options before the myriad of Fiesta celebrations later this month will have an opportunity to stop by the UTSA Main Campus this weekend for some fun, friends and fitness. Admission to the grounds and many activities are free.
The annual Fiesta FitFest comes to the UTSA East Campus, courtesy of San Antonio Sports, the event’s organizer, and presenter H-E-B. Founded in 1984, San Antonio Sports has shined a spotlight on the Alamo City with such renowned events as the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and NCAA Championships. To date, the organization has brought in more than $1 billion to the local economy.
The fun of FitFest will begin at 5 p.m. today and conclude at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14. Organized by San Antonio Sports and presented by H-E-B, this official Fiesta event will feature an amateur cycling competition, a 5K and 10K run/walk, a health and wellness expo, fitness classes and activities for the kids.
The weekend begins with the opening of the Fiesta FitFest Athlete’s Village & Expo at 5 p.m. Presented by University Health, this is the spot for those looking to enjoy fitness classes, take a look at the wares of various fitness-related vendors and enjoy family-friendly events, including the balance bike academy.
International folklorico dance group Grupo Folklorico de Benediciónes will kick off the sounds of the Fiesta season at 5:45, followed by the opening ceremony at 6 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the annual Boots & Brews Beer Mile begins. Participants will run/walk four laps around the festival grounds at UTSA (“a country mile”), stopping at the end of each lap to drink a beer. Another option is the beer yoga class — where participants drink beer during and/or after the class — which begins at 8 p.m.
The fun continues from 6 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Among the day’s events is the SATX 5K & 10K presented by Michelob Ultra. The event is for runners, joggers and walkers. Those who are 21 years of age or older can enjoy a cold, complimentary Michelob Ultra Enjoy after they cross the finish line.
Throughout the day, the Thomas J. Henry Center Stage will be the site of several events, including Camp Gladiator, a full-body cardio/strength training workout; fitness classes by Orange Theory, a leading fitness studio franchise and Zumba. The stage will also be the site for the awards ceremonies for the 5K and 10K runners.
Sunday marks the start of one of FitFest’s signature events, L’Étape Texas by Tour de France. Cyclists can chose from a 100-miler, 60-miler or 25-miler trek, or take part in the Family Ride or Kids Ride. UTSA is the starting point. From there, cyclists will head into the Texas Hill Country on partially and fully closed roads. Whatever trek participants choose L’Étape Texas is an opportunity to participate in a Texas-style Tour de France experience.
Formerly known as L’Étape San Antonio, the event has been rebranded and is now operated by San Antonio Sports.
