DECEMBER 2, 2024 — UTSA psychology professor Michael Baumann has been selected as a Fellow of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP). Baumann is the only UTSA psychology professor to be appointed as a Fellow, and this was his first nomination for the position.
SPSP fellows have made extraordinary and distinctive contributions to the science of personality and social psychology. The selection committee considers publication record, impact of research, service to the field, community outreach and teaching.
Baumann, who joined the UTSA faculty in 2001, bridges the areas between social and other subfields of psychology, most notably organizational psychology. Primarily, his research applies social psychology to decision making processes and performance in groups and teams, as well as social factors involved in substance use. He has published a wide range of journal articles and has been awarded several large grants to support his research.
In addition to his research, Baumann has contributed to social psychology in the form of developing graduate programs bridging social to other areas of psychology as well as serving on and chairing SPSP committees. He also continuously incorporates social psychology into his extensive mentoring of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at UTSA and externally.
“Being elected as a Fellow is a considerable honor, particularly because this recognition comes from peer leaders in the field of social psychology,” said Sandra Morrissette, chair of the UTSA Department of Psychology.
SPSP is comprised of more than 7,500 members and strives to advance the science, teaching and application of personality and social psychology.
