The first raising of national and state flags over the new UTSA campus will be conducted in ceremonies on Wednesday, September 7 on the university’s central plaza.

Cadets from the St. Mary’s University Army ROTC, which includes students from UTSA as well as from St. Mary’s and other universities, will present colors and conduct the flag raising.

Tomás Rivera, UTSA vice president for administration, will speak briefly at the flag raising. The First Cavalry Division Band from Fort Hood will play during the ceremony.

Flag poles, installed by UTSA as part of the recent site development and landscaping project, were accepted from the contractor in July.

UPDATES

Students participating in ROTC in UTSA’s early years were affiliated with ROTC programs at nearby schools, such as St. Mary’s and later what was then Southwest Texas State University, until programs for UTSA were approved.

The area on the central plaza, part of Sombrilla Plaza, where the flag poles stand was later named Frost Plaza after longtime UTSA friend Tom C. Frost.
