Biofeedback may be the answer for you!

What is Biofeedback – Listen to Your Body

Biofeedback is a process that allows students to learn how to change physiological activity for the purpose of improving performance. A student learns how his or her physical body reacts to stress. The biofeedback instrument will feed back information about the student’s physiological state that is associated with the student’s psychological state. Students are also taught techniques to reduce stress in the body. The awareness of this mind-body connection is the first phase of biofeedback assisted relaxation. Once a student is aware of how his/her body feels physically when stressed and when relaxed and calm, the student uses the relaxation techniques to move into the calm and focus state with the help of positive reinforcement.

At Counseling Services, we use the Heart Math software, which gives positive reinforcement through visual changes on the computer screen, pleasant auditory tones, and changes in color that indicate a calm and focused state. Once a student understands how to move in and out of the calm and focused state with the assistance of the biofeedback device, the student can transfer this learning to daily life, and have control to move in and out of a calm and focused state as she or he wishes.

Who can use Biofeedback

Counseling Services provides two ways to utilize Biofeedback to assist students in regulating emotions:

  1. Independently for stress management without the guidance of a clinician at every session.
  2. As an adjunct training to enhance the individual counseling a student is receiving.
