The goal of Jump Start – Calculus is to help participants place into the highest level math course they are able to successfully complete as early as possible in their undergraduate career, helping them complete their degree in a timely manner. Historically 78% of Jump Start-Calculus participants, who completed the program, improved their math placement by one or more math courses.
Jump Start – Calculus provides incoming first-time freshman, who are eligible to take the New Calculus Math Placement Exam, the opportunity to take a one and a half day intensive refresher course in preparation for taking the placement exam. The program is offered during the summer and several sessions are offered. Sessions occur on Monday and Tuesday during program weeks. During each one and a half day session, participants work with a UTSA math professor and experienced upperclassman tutors. Participants review algebra concepts and most will have the chance to move to Pre-Calculus in preparation for the placement exam.
Jump Start – Calculus is a free program, however participants are responsible for their own housing, transportation, parking, food and incidentals along with any testing fees. For more information on Jump Start – Calculus and information on registration and housing, please contact the Jump Start – Calculus program at (210) 458-6783.
Students are allowed to take a math placement exam twice during their undergraduate career at UTSA. Participants will use both attempts during the program, one prior to the Jump Start Course and the second on Tuesday morning during the program session. Participants must have already taken the New Calculus Math Placement Exam prior to the session date or be registered for the New Calculus Math Placement exam on the Monday morning of the program session. For more information about the math placement exam, please contact Testing Services at (210) 458-4125 or visit their website at http://www.utsa.edu/testing/
