In Memoriam: James Garcia

February 20, 2020

Dear Business Affairs Team,

Our team sadly lost one of our own this month. Communications Officer James A. Garcia passed away Feb. 5 after a short illness. James was a dedicated employee who would have celebrated his 14th anniversary with Public Safety on February 20.

James’ career at UTSA was entirely in Business Affairs. He began his career at UTSA in 2004 with the Office of Facilities, before transitioning to Public Safety in 2006 as a telecommunications operator. He was awarded Dispatcher of the Year in 2012, a testament to his commitment to making UTSA a safer place.

James was a family man, a man of faith and a friend to anyone who knew him. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara.

James was an incredible human being who cared about the safety of the community,” said Capt. Thomas Calucci. “He was an amazing person and friend to all. He cared deeply for his loved ones, friends and coworkers. Without fail, he always had a smile and would easily bring a laugh to everyone around him. He was always willing to step in and help wherever needed. James leaves behind a lasting impact on those connected to him, and will be missed by his Public Safety family.”

A celebration of James’ life will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Main Building, Regents Room (MB 3.106). This service is open to the UTSA community for anyone who would like to pay their respects.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of loss.
