Recently, financial professionals from across Texas gathered for the Texas Association of State Senior College and University Business Officers (TASSCUBO) Summer Conference. Held at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, located in Bastrop, Texas, this meeting brought together nearly 200 experts in higher education funding and finance.

The three-day conference covered topics including ethics, compliance, asset management, facilities planning and employee engagement. A featured panel focused on a Fireside Chat with university Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and Provosts, aimed at better understanding how these leaders work together to address the strategic challenges and opportunities confronting their institutions of higher education, and how they support their presidents.

Veronica Salazar, UTSA Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs, and Kimberly Espy, UTSA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at UTSA, were invited to serve as panelists alongside colleagues from Texas A&M University-Commerce. The conversation was moderated by Carlos Hernandez, Interim President of Sul Ross State University.

Salazar and Espy discussed issues facing leadership in higher education, including strategic planning, pandemic response and the upcoming legislative session. A key focus of the panel was effective teamwork between cross-functional areas.

“At UTSA, the areas of Business Affairs and Academic Affairs work in collaborative partnership to ensure the success of our students and campus community,” said Salazar. “As colleagues, we are motivated by the transformative role of higher education and the impact UTSA continues to make in the San Antonio community.”
