June Celebrations

June 6, 2022

Throughout the month of June, we recognize several important cultural celebrations. These celebrations are a time for us to come together to acknowledge and appreciate the diversity in our community. At UTSA, many events and activities will be hosted in honor of these important celebrations.

June is National Immigrant Heritage Month, a time when we focus on honoring the contributions of immigrants. Working in the field of higher education, I am humbled by the impact of immigrants on our community. Throughout the month, the Dreamers Resource Center will share updates on social media and host events to recognize Immigrant Heritage Month.

This month, we also celebrate Pride Month. Organizations at UTSA come together to host meaningful events and activities to recognize, celebrate and support the LGBTQI+ community. Follow the Multicultural Student Center for Equity and Justice, the Pride Faculty and Staff Association and the Office of Inclusive Excellence for additional details, or check the Inclusive Excellence LGBTQIA+ Pride Month website for updated event information.

We recognize June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month, a special opportunity to celebrate the vibrant cultures, traditions, languages and values of Caribbean Americans. This month, we reflect on the significant contributions of Caribbean American professionals throughout our society.

On June 19, we recognize Juneteenth. This date marks the occasion in 1865 when troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to read General Order Number 3, proclaiming all enslaved people were free. In June 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday. Each year, the UTSA Student Union partners with the Multicultural Student Center for Equity and Justice and the Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender & Sexuality Studies to host an event commemorating Juneteenth and celebrating liberation. Follow the Student Union for event updates.

I encourage everyone to take an active part in the cultural celebrations throughout June. Working together, we can continue to support and promote diversity and inclusion throughout the Roadrunner community.
