Internationally renowned engineer Eric Brey is the Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. Endowed Chair in Mechanics and a distinguished leader in positioning UTSA as a premier institution for scientific research. Brey’s research interests include tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and biomaterials. Brey is also invested in engineering education, with a specific interest in the influence of undergraduate research on education and career trajectories.
Brey’s research lab is currently investigating new, biomaterial approaches for engineering vascularized tissues and novel imaging methods for analysis and monitoring of engineered tissues. Brey’s research is truly impressive, with over 150 publications, 5,177 citations and an h-index of 43.
Brey leads the Biomedical Engineering Research for Active military and Veterans (BRAVe) program, which, over the course of 3 years, will place 30 undergraduates in a 10-week summer research lab, improving student retention and providing resources for undergraduates, active duty military and veterans.
Brey is Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and co-Director of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine. He earned his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering at Rice University and was an NIH post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center before joining UTSA in 2017.
