Yanmin (Emily) Gong’s research interests include security and privacy in big data, machine learning, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, mobile computing, and wireless networks.
She currently directs the Trustworthy and Intelligent Networked Systems (TINS) Lab at UTSA, which is focused on in-depth understanding and fundamental design in security and privacy, machine learning, Internet of Things, and wireless networks. The lab is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Research Lab, the Department of Defense, and University of Texas Systems.
Gong’s work has been published in multiple academic journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics & Security, the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the IEEE Open Journal of the Computer Society, and the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. She is also an associate editor for ACM Computing Surveys and the IEEE Wireless Communications. She has presented her research at the 30th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in 2021 and the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2022 as a spotlight presentation. In addition, Gong also serves as awards co-chair for the Networking Networking Women (N2Women) Board and has served on the technical program committee for multiple conferences such as IEEE INFOCOM, the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI).
Gong has made extensive contributions to her field, with an h-index of 16 and nearly 1200 citations. Her work has been recognized by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense, and she has received a total of nearly $1.4 million in competitive grants from both organizations to help fund multiple research projects.
Outside of her research efforts, Gong is an active member of the dissertation committee for her college, and supports both undergraduate and graduate students as an academic advisor.
Gong earned her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Florida.
