Explore Spring Entrepreneurial Courses - Carlos Alvarez College of Business

This course introduces students to entrepreneurship, its importance to our economy and society and its role in bringing new ideas to market. Course provides an overview of the basic concepts of entrepreneurship focusing on the nature, environment, and risks of new business formation. Topics include opportunity recognition, innovation, market assessment, intellectual property, and financing the product or service idea.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. An introduction to entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on identifying, evaluating and developing new venture opportunities. Topics may include opportunity identification and evaluation, startup strategies, business valuation, business model and business plan development, financing the venture, and exit strategies. Case studies and guest lectures by entrepreneurs and venture capital partners provide a real-world perspective. The major deliverable of this course is usually an early stage business model of a venture of the student’s choosing.

This class is a unique opportunity to get real-world experience in consulting and entrepreneurship. You will work intensively with a local entrepreneur to develop a fundable business plan. Along with learning and applying business concepts, you will learn important consulting skills like understanding clients’ needs; setting achievable goals; building trust; and guiding clients towards good decisions. You will be coached by the professor and an industry expert mentor. The class is limited to 7 students and the Professor’s approval is required.
