The Supervised Independent Living (SIL) program provides on-campus housing and meals for UT San Antonio students age 18-21 in extended foster care.

Apply

Your DFPS Caseworker will send your application to the UT San Antonio SIL program. Once approved by UT San Antonio, you can apply for student housing at Laurel Village. View the available 4-bedroom floor plan at UT San Antonio - Laurel Village housing.

Student Housing

Meal Plan

  • After you submit your application for student housing, log in to your student ASAP account.
  • Choose the Student Services tab at the top of the page.
  • Click the UTSACard link.
  • In the UTSACard menu, click the Meal Plan Application link.
  • Select Roadrunner Silver for the academic year (fall and spring).
  • Complete and submit the application.

Confirmation

Once you have completed the applications for your Student Housing and Meal Plans, DFPS and UT San Antonio will work with you to confirm a move-in date.

Next Steps

Once you are a part of SIL, a Campus Coach will contact you to set up a visit with the Fostering Futures Program. The Campus Coach will be in touch with you throughout your participation in SIL and can support you with any questions you have about the program.

Eligibility

How long can I participate?

As long as you are signed-in to extended foster care and continue to enroll at UT San Antonio, you can participate in SIL.

Do I have to stay until I'm 21?

No, you can discharge from the program at any time. Work with your Campus Coach to create a transition plan so you can discharge safely and smoothly when you are ready.

I’m turning 21 and will still be in college. What are my housing options when I age out of care?

We want to make sure that you have safe and affordable housing when you discharge from SIL. Work closely with your Campus Coach when you are preparing to leave SIL to set up housing resources. The Fostering Futures Program has Emergency Funds that may be able to assist with moving costs.

Living on campus

What housing options are available?

The Laurel Village 4-bedroom units are the only housing option we currently have available under SIL.

What do I need to bring?

Laurel Village offers fully furnished units with a bed, dresser drawers, and desk. Prepare to bring bedding, room decorations, dishes, cleaning products, and any other personal items you want to keep in your bedroom.

Will I have a kitchen?

Yes, your unit is equipped with a kitchenette area including a full-size refrigerator, a kitchen sink, microwave, and cabinet space for kitchenware. Laurel Village is designed with several central community centers where you will be able to access a full-size kitchen to prepare larger meals using a stovetop and oven.

Where can I do laundry?

Laundry facilities are available in Laurel Village for you to access on-site using your UTSACard. As a student who lives on campus, you have access to these facilities at all time during your participation in SIL.

Which meal plans are available?

Currently the Roadrunner Silver plan is the only meal plan option available under SIL.

Where do I get mail?

Your Campus Coach will assist you to sign up for a mailbox in the UPS store located in the Student Union. You will have access to this mailbox as long as you participate in the SIL program.

How do I receive my stipend?

Your stipend will be applied to your student account through ASAP at the beginning of each semester. Please be sure to keep your direct deposit information in your ASAP account up to date to receive your stipend as quickly as possible.

Does anyone else have keys to my room?

UT San Antonio Housing staff members are able to access all rooms at any time in the event of an emergency. Staff in the Fostering Futures Program do not have keys to your room.

Are we allowed to have pets?

Pets are not allowed in Laurel Village. However, if you are a student with a documented disability, you may be eligible to have an Emotional Support Animal. Contact your Campus Coach for more information.

Do I have to leave campus during student holidays?

No. SIL is open year-round and you can stay in your room over any student holiday in the Academic Calendar at UT San Antonio.

Can I stay in SIL in the even if I don’t take summer semester classes?

Yes! As long as you are enrolled for the following fall semester, you can stay in SIL over the summer.

SIL Program

What are the program rules?

Your Campus Coach will review the Written Agreement for participating in this program. You must follow your UTSA Housing contract at all times.

When do I meet with my campus coach?

Your Campus Coach will ask to meet with you at least once a month. You can meet in the Fostering Futures Program office or any other safe space on campus. Fostering Futures Program staff do not visit your room unless you ask us to or in the event of an emergency that compromises your safety or the safety of others.

What other services can I access as a SIL participant?

You are eligible to access any services offered through the Fostering Futures Program and all services open to UTSA students.
