Commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2023

Colleagues,

As we prepare to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to reflect on the powerful lessons Dr. King taught. He understood the deep divides that exist in our country, yet never lost sight of his goals to create a more equitable place for all.

As a learning community, we are responsible for educating the leaders of tomorrow to help make the world a safer, more inclusive place. As we begin our new semester, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the important work we do to empower our students to tackle our society’s grandest challenges.

I invite you to learn more about the
MLK March hosted by the City of San Antonio on Monday, January 16 at 10 a.m.—the city’s first in-person march since January 2020. I plan to participate alongside many of our colleagues and students and hope you’ll consider joining us. You can register to march with UTSA through January 15 at midnight (or until registration reaches capacity).

We’re also looking forward to celebrating
Black History Month in February—themed “Resistance. Persistence. Excellence”—with various activities and lectures hosted virtually and on campus. Of note, our Office of Inclusive Excellence will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Lecture on February 23 featuring keynote Dr. Fred Bonner, II. To learn more about other planned events, visit the Black History Month calendar of activities.

As always, I’d like to thank each of you for working so hard to develop our students into engaged citizens and future leaders. Let’s continue learning from one another and embracing each other’s differences to make the world a more inclusive place.

With appreciation,

Taylor Eighmy
President
