Office of the President

Message From The President - October 2015

Dear Friends,

This afternoon, in my annual State of the University address, I announced some historic news for UTSA and for San Antonio, and I am very excited to share that news with you.

We have just concluded our first-ever capital campaign, We Are UTSA – A Top-Tier Campaign, raising $180 million to support undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, faculty research and recruitment, campus activities, and community outreach programs. That's $60 million more than the goal we set when we launched the campaign in 2009.

Nearly 33,000 donors contributed more than 70,000 gifts, and the impact is monumental. With these gifts, we've already created 143 endowments including 70 endowed scholarships, 41 endowed faculty positions and 32 graduate fellowships.

Through one gift alone, a $22 million estate gift bequeathed by former schoolteacher Mary E. McKinney, we've so far provided scholarships to 170 high-achieving undergraduates. The gift goes on in perpetuity.

When we started this campaign, we knew UTSA had momentum, but the groundswell of support that we received from the San Antonio community has far exceeded what we could have imagined. This is one of the great achievements in our 46-year history.

San Antonio wants a Tier One university. It believes in UTSA. And it is committed to supporting our students, faculty and researchers so that excellence thrives at our university and in our city.

Your investment has made it possible to bring the best and brightest students to UTSA, educated by renowned faculty and researchers. I am so thankful for your support, trust and generosity.

I also want to thank our campaign chairs, Tom Frost and James Bodenstedt '96, the campaign committee, and our development board for leading us to this success.

This accomplishment is a major milestone that takes us one step closer to Tier One designation, and gives San Antonio even more momentum as a world-class city.

Thank you for sharing UTSA's vision of becoming a Tier One institution. Thank you for your generosity. And thank you for ensuring that excellence continues to thrive at UTSA and in San Antonio.

Go 'Runners!
