SGA Student Spotlight

Name: Jose "Andy" Escobedo

Position: 2021-2022 Student Body President

Hometown: Mission, TX

Major: Political Science

What is your favorite memory from UTSA?
My first Howdy Rowdy Bash back in the Fall of 2018 was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had. I remember attending the Jesse McCartney performance with my friends and then having the whole park closed down just for UTSA students. I’m reminded that even though we’re all here to get the most out of our education, we’re also here to get the full college experience. I hope we can give students some of that when we come back this Fall.

What are you working on in SGA right now?
Right now I’m working on building the necessary infrastructure and relationships needed in order for SGA to reach its full potential. Long-term goals and systemic change can only be achieved when we work towards a better system for representing you. I’m also working on ensuring a safe return to campus in the fall and that our educational tools and methods are meeting the ever-changing needs of students. Several projects concerning different aspects of student life are underway here at SGA, so keep an eye out for exciting updates as they come out!
What would you say to someone considering joining Student Government?
I would say “the more, the merrier!” Our mission of service is a never-ending one that takes the combined effort of all our members. Joining this team means that you are choosing to represent something bigger than yourself. This is also an opportunity to test vital skills in any profession: policy literacy, project-management, public speaking, and networking. It’s a big step for anyone - especially me when I joined back in my freshman year as a senator. If you think this is what you’re looking for in your college experience, reach out today!
