Today's protest in the Central Plaza

Dear Roadrunners,

We wanted to let you know about a protest that took place on the Main Campus today.

This afternoon, two different groups were present in the Central Plaza area sharing distinctive viewpoints, which resulted in confrontations between individuals. We will review and investigate these confrontations within the scope of our policies.

Although it may be difficult to experience opposing viewpoints, I want you to understand that our obligation is to abide by Texas law, while at the same time, fostering a conducive academic environment. Effective September 1, 2019, the outdoor spaces of our campuses are considered public forums and therefore open to outside groups for expressive activity as we shared in a previous email.  

We fully recognize that some in our campus community may object to the views espoused by certain groups, while others will agree with those views. At times like this, and as we anticipate more campus activity in this year of heightened political debate, it is important that we foster a culture of respect.

Later this week, you will receive an additional email outlining more information about our campus status as an open forum, frequently asked questions, and tools and strategies for self-care when groups appear on campus.

In closing, I want to share that various viewpoints, even challenging ones, add value to everyone’s educational pursuits. I encourage you to join our efforts to create additional programming around this topic. Our charge is to encourage helpful action and conducive conversations. If you are interested in participating, please email me.
