Student organizations have something for everyone
(Aug. 31, 2015) — Studying, going to classes, passing exams—that’s how to get a college education. Diving into student organizations and getting involved in UTSA life—that’s getting a college experience. Student organizations are a great way to make new friends and gain skills to carry along as a proud alum.
Interested in cycling? Yep, there’s a club for that. Ready to dabble in advertising? Check out the American Advertising Federation Student Chapter. You can dive into Chinese language and culture with CLCC or join the cause for a greener world with The Green Society. There’s even a Badminton Club. With more than 300 organizations on campus, there’s something for everyone, and if getting involved with campus life is more your style, there are plenty of opportunities with these organizations:
Roadrunner Productions is responsible for many on campus events, including gatherings to pep up spirit for the football team and even a dueling pianos party. Aside from that, students learn organizational skills and how to work together as a team to pull off programs and special events, which is a great set of tools to have after graduation.
The Student Government Association acts as the official advocate and voice of the student body. They meet weekly to hear from students and act as leaders and collaborators with the faculty and staff of UTSA to make their voices heard. SGA holds elections for freshmen senators and vacant positions the first week of September and also hosts events throughout the year celebrating UTSA traditions, such as the homecoming golf cart decorating party.
UTSA’s Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education and Service (VOICES) is a community outreach club. Its members organize and attend volunteer events, including Extreme Makeover: UTSA Edition, wherein students, faculty and staff work with campus officials to beautify the main campus with trash pickup, painting and landscaping. They also host a Hunger Banquet each year, allowing participants to eat a meal based on the socioeconomic status they draw randomly at the door to spread awareness about income disparity and hunger.
