Roadrunners host historic foe UAB for Hispanic Heritage Game

Roadrunners host historic foe UAB for Hispanic Heritage Game

UTSA quarterback Frank Harris returned from injury with an outstanding performance, scoring four touchdowns in UTSA's 49-34 win over Temple.

OCTOBER 12, 2023 — The last two times UTSA and UAB squared off on the gridiron, football fans were treated to a pair of highly competitive instant classics. Another one may be in store for those watching the Roadrunners and Blazers battle once again at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 14 at the Alamodome.

UTSA (2-3) won a shootout in its very first game in the American Athletic Conference last Saturday, besting Temple by a score of 49-34. Quarterback Frank Harris, who had missed UTSA’s previous two games with an injury, led a tremendous offensive effort for the Roadrunners. Harris passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a rushing touchdown. UTSA running backs Robert Henry and Kevorian Barnes chipped in three more touchdowns in the victory. UAB (2-4) is also looking to build off of its very first win in The American after defeating South Florida 56-35 last week.

The Roadrunners and Blazers are certainly no strangers. The two teams are former Conference USA foes whose fierce matchups have often had major implications on the conference championship. In 2021, a miraculous comeback in the final minute punched UTSA’s ticket to the Conference USA Championship Game and ended UAB’s three-year streak as the conference’s West Division champions. In 2022, the Roadrunners topped the Blazers again in a back-and-forth affair that wasn’t settled until the second overtime period. It was one of UTSA’s toughest challenges in the team’s run to a second consecutive conference championship.

Without a doubt, Saturday’s contest at the Alamodome will mark yet another important showdown between these two programs, which are now looking to keep pace with Tulane, Memphis, Florida Atlantic and SMU atop the American Athletic Conference standings.

In honor of UTSA’s continuing recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Saturday’s matchup has been tabbed as the university’s annual Hispanic Heritage Game. Ballet Folklórico Sol de San Antonio and Mariachi Los Paisanos will perform at halftime with the Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band to herald Hispanic culture. Rubén Minutti Zanatta, Cónsul General of México in San Antonio, will perform the pre-game coin toss.

The university will also be celebrating Family Weekend during Saturday’s game. The UTSA Family of the Year, as selected through an annual essay contest, will be recognized during the game. Families of UTSA students will also be invited to attend the Student Indoor Tailgate and sit in the UTSA student section (more information below).

Roadrunner Nation is invited to show its school spirit on Saturday at the following family-friendly events:

Ballet Folklórico Sol de San Antonio posed for a photo with UTSA President Taylor Eighmy and First Lady Peggy Eighmy at last year's Hispanic Heritage Game. The cultural dance ensemble will return this year to perform at halftime of the 2023 Hispanic Heritage Game.
