The Teaching Online Academy is a professional development course for faculty who are interested in building a high-quality online course. The course is free and offered in a fully online format during June 1 – June 30, 2017. While quizzes, assignments, and posts have specific due dates, the course is self-paced in the sense that participants choose when and where to study and complete those required assessments. Throughout the course participants will build important components of their own online course. The estimated commitment to successfully complete the Teaching Online Academy is 40 hours.

The course features facilitation by internal staff and external faculty members with more than 40 years of experience in designing and teaching online courses.

Please Note: By submitting this application, you agree to implement at least one online course at UTSA that meets the cQual best practices rubric by the fall semester of 2018. Applicants accepted to the Teaching Online Academy will be required to obtain permission from their department chair to attend the academy and teach an online course.

Workshop Outcomes
Successful participants can expect to complete the Teaching Online Academy with the knowledge and skills to:
  • Build their course foundation following best practices for online teaching.
  • Design content and activities based on the Universal Design for Learning principles.
  • Implement an effective online assessment strategy.
  • Establish instructor presence and effectively manage an online course.

Certificates awarded upon successful completion of the Teaching Online Academy requirements.

After completing the Teaching Online Academy, it takes 4-6 months for participants to finalize the design and development of their online course with the support of the Online Learning team.
