Vice President for Student Affairs

As Vice President for Student Affairs, Sam Gonzales oversees Student Life, Student Services and now Campus Services. Over his 40-year career at UTSA Sam has held leadership positions as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Administration and as Assistant Vice President of Student Services. He also served in interim positions, including Vice President for Business Affairs and Assistant Vice President for Student Life.

Sam has served in a variety of leadership positions with external organizations. At the national level, he was elected to and is currently serving a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the Council on Student Affairs for the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities. He has served in numerous capacities including president of the Cooperative Education and Internship Association (CEIA). Regionally he has served as treasurer of the Southwest Association of Colleges & Employers and president of the SACUPA placement association. Locally he chairs the financial aid committee for the Baumberger Endowment Agency, which has provided over $5 million dollars to UTSA students.

Through his career, his teams have been honored with the Alcohol EDU national award for Excellence in Prevention Programming in 2007, the UTSA Richard S. Howe Excellence in Service to Undergraduate Students Award and the UTSA Team Spirit Award.

Sam earned a Master of Education Degree in Psychology and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Our Lady of the Lake University. Additionally, he was a Kellogg Fellow in Education Policy with the Institute of Educational Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin.

On the personal side, Sam is an avid mountain bike trail rider and plays golf about three times per month. He is also a big fan of pop music.
