Reflection and Brightening as a Tool for Self Improvement

Greetings, to my Blue, Green, Orange, and Gold colleagues! At the end of each True Colors presentation, facilitators reiterate the fact that each participant is a spectrum of colors and much more than the traits associated with their single dominant color. As a new facilitator on the True Colors team and a new professional in higher education, I have realized how important it is for each person to reflect on their entire spectrum for continual self-improvement.

It is as important to consider your least dominant traits as the most dominant. In fact, I remember receiving a straight “A” report in the second grade and my mother explaining to me that my teacher wanted me to show more initiative. I had no idea what the word meant, but I knew it was a noted area of improvement. As I learned what initiative was, I made an effort to brighten that aspect hoping to show my teacher that I was capable of initiative, even if it was not an innate trait. (Can you tell I’m a dominant blue?) Now as members of a large student affairs network, we need to make a conscious effort to utilize characteristics from our entire spectrum of ability to improve ourselves and the cohesiveness of our division. For example, I try to brighten my gold when I am working on a team in order to be as efficient and reliable contributing structure to the group.

This month, I challenge each of us to reflect on your True Colors spectrum and pay attention to your least dominant colors. What characteristics from your least dominant colors can you brighten in your various work environments to balance the team and yourself? Remember, you are more than just a Blue, Green, Orange, or Gold; you are the entire spectrum.
