“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning.”
— Benjamin FranklinEvaluation is a common theme in higher education and most certainly a constant in Student Affairs. What does it mean to evaluate? It is the review and judgment of programs, services, and contributions in order to determine their value or worth. (Cranton & Legge, 1978)
Continuous efforts at self-evaluation can keep us on a path of personal growth. Here are some sample prompts to try with yourself and your team to prompt reflection and discussion:
- How have you effectively demonstrated the Four C’s with coworkers in the last month?
- Are you providing excellence in programing or services to students or staff?
- Are you effectively educating students in our various REACH domains?
Each of us plays an integral role in the overall success of the Student Affairs division: our work impacts students, directly and indirectly, each and every day. Evaluating our contributions is an important step in our shared journey toward individual and institutional excellence.
