(May 31, 2019) -- In recognition of the powerful impact that UTSA has had in fostering higher education and community collaboration, the West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce (WSACC) today presented President Taylor Eighmy with its Legacy Innovator of the Year Award. The award recognizes Eighmy’s dedication and innovative leadership in bringing economic opportunity to the West Side of San Antonio.
“Over the last year, I’ve had many conversations with President Eighmy, and I can attest to the fact that he cares deeply about San Antonio and particularly the West Side community,” said Kristi G. Villanueva, WSACC President and CEO. “His vision to expand UTSA and provide our community with education, employment, and arts and culture opportunities is commendable. I am excited to collaborate with him to achieve our shared goal of community support through the evolution of growth and preservation.”
Eighmy joined UTSA as its sixth president in fall 2017. Since that time, he has laid forth a bold, 10-year vision for UTSA to tackle the grand challenges facing the San Antonio community by being a model for student success, a great public research university, and an exemplar of strategic growth and innovative excellence. To advance his vision to expand the Downtown Campus, he is working closely with community members in San Antonio’s urban core and with the city’s Westside community.
“The West Side is an integral part of UTSA,” said Eighmy. “We have students and alumni who have grown up on the West Side, and some of our faculty members come from the West Side. We embrace our responsibility to be a good neighbor that helps foster the historical and cultural integrity of this important community and others like it.”
He added, “Our commitment is to provide our West Side neighbors and their children with access to an affordable, world-class education within walking distance of their homes while developing a new high-tech corridor to power the city into the future.”
Eighmy will receive the WSACC award at the Legacy Gala, an annual tradition established in 2008 to highlight individuals and organizations who work side by side with the Chamber to help others in the realm of public service, education and advocacy. The gala will be held on May 31, 2019.
UTSA is home to 32,000 students and more than 131,000 alumni. Two-thirds of UTSA graduates who enter the workforce remain in San Antonio to assist with solving the grand challenges of a thriving community.
