“After an attempt to run 100 miles in four days to celebrate the 50th anniversary of UTSA and honor his father’s 100 years young, UTSA alumnus Tony Doan ’99, who goes by Tri, exceeded his goal and achieved something only a select few can claim: the accomplishment of running a full marathon (26.2 miles) each day for four consecutive days.

On the first day of Tri’s run, Saturday March 30, 2019, he began at McAllister Park and ran to St. Helena Episcopal Church in Boerne, Texas. It was cold and windy, but he managed to finish 30.1 miles on the first and toughest day of his trip.

The next day, a Sunday, Tri woke up, went to a church and ran back to UTSA Main Campus for a total of three stops: from his hotel to the church for 1.49 miles, from the church to the Rim for 15.65 miles, and finally, from the Rim to the UTSA Main Campus for 5.44 miles. His total mileage the second day was 22.58 miles. Tri broke 50 miles when he completed his second day’s run on UTSA Campus, a nod to his alma mater’s anniversary.

On day three of his trek, Tri ran from the UTSA Main Campus to the UTSA Downtown Campus, through some of San Antonio’s most popular areas: Datapoint Dr., Woodlawn Lake, San Antonio College, The Alamo, the historic King William District, the Alamodome, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures, the Tower of Americas and historic Market Square. He only stopped once, at San Antonio College at 17.69 miles, before taking off again and adding another 10.68 miles for a total of 28.37 miles.

On the fourth and final day, Tuesday April 2, 2019, Tri broke his run into three segments for a total of 26.60 miles. His first segment was from the Downtown Campus to the River Walk in King William District, then to the River Walk in Downtown area and over to the Pearl Brewery. His second stretch took up the roads, where he ran from the Pearl to the Japanese Garden, then the Zoo, the Witte Museum, the McNay Museum and Austin Highway. On the final leg, Tri ran from Austin Highway onto Salado Creek Greenway and over to Robin Park Trailhead before finishing his quest at McAllister Park Trailhead.

All in all, Tri ran just over 106 miles in honor of his alma mater and his father.

Tri graduated from UTSA in 1999 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Though he says UTSA has grown far beyond the campus he knew in the 80s and 90s, the atmosphere of excitement and achievement is still the same. His favorite professors from his time on campus are Neal Wagner, Steven Robins and Hugh Maynard. ”
