Pre-Law Advising

The University of Texas at San Antonio Prelaw Advising is housed within the Institute for Law and Public Affairs. The Institute offers a variety of prelaw services and programs tailored to your stage in your undergraduate education and law school application process. Your pre-law advisor will help you make more informed decisions about your preparation for law school and legal career and is happy to meet with you for individual prelaw advising sessions. Please contact your prelaw advisor at ilpa@utsa.edu or set up a prelaw appointment with the Institute for Law and Public Affairs (ILPA) in Handshake. Your prelaw advisor does not replace the role of your college academic advisor, but your prelaw advisor can help you by:

 

Addressing how to find if law school is fit for you

  • Recommending ways to gain exposure to the law and legal profession

Preparing you for law school and Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

  • Giving advice on undergraduate course selection for law school LSAT 
  • Suggesting a timeline for law school preparation and application 
  • Recommending extra-curricular activities that will allow you to become a more rounded person in preparations for law school
  • Discussing the two entrance exam options, the LSAT and GRE
  • Offering a plan, strategies, and resources for effective LSAT preparation
  • Suggesting resources to research law schools to apply to, based on your credentials, interests, and goals
  • Recommending resources and tools for financing your legal education

Addressing and assisting with the law school application process

  • Discussing the application components 
  • Reviewing your personal statement, resume, and optional essays, and answering all your law school application questions 
  • Suggesting how to select strong recommenders for letters of recommendation 
  • Talking about how to address potentially unfavorable or delicate topics in the law school application 
  • Addressing scholarship reconsideration, waitlist process, and other related topics to law school application and admission processes.
