Josh Childress

Associate Director of Student Success

  • I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005 and my law degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2009.
  • I practiced law for several years and taught law at St. Mary’s University
  • I bring over a decade of experience in higher education to this position (as a student, professor, and success coach).
  • I am forward-focused, non-judgmental, and a self-proclaimed problem solver.
  • When I’m not helping students overcome their academic obstacles, I enjoy playing with my kids, talking with my wife, and DIY-ing our house into oblivion.

  • I’m from New York City
  • I received my Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Monroe College in 1995. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from The City University of New York, Lehman College Campus, in 1998.   I completed my Master's Degree In Creative Writing in 2002 from the City University of New York, City College Campus.  In my final year as a Graduate student, I was awarded a New York Times Fellowship Award in Creative Writing.
  • I was a full-time English Professor at Monroe College from 2003 to 2013. I worked as an English Professor with both South University and ECPI University here in San Antonio.
  • I have over 15 years of experience in higher Ed both as a Professor, as well as a mentor to students from many diverse backgrounds. This includes First Gen and international students, Military students, and adult learners returning to school after many years away.
  • I am a creative problem solver and think fast on my feet.  I also work well under pressure and love challenging myself to learn new things as often as I can.
  • In my Free time I enjoy going to the movies with my wife and daughter, playing with our dogs Chloe and Coco, and collecting rare comic books and toys. I am also a video game enthusiast. You can find me doing my 15th or 20th playthrough of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, or Cyberpunk 2077 in my downtime!

  • I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica 
  • I was a Division I collegiate athlete at Louisiana Tech University, where I specialized in the hammer throw on the track and field team. 
  • I earned my Bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a minor in Kinesiology, and soon after, I continued my passion for athletics by becoming a Graduate Assistant for the track and field team at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio 
  • I graduated summa cum laude with my Master’s in Sports Administration, which was a proud moment for me! 
  • Over the years, I’ve had the joy of coaching track and field and flag football  
  • I’m thrilled to be a Student Success Coach at UTSA, where I get to support students with time management, beating procrastination, and navigating college life. Helping students succeed is truly one of the most rewarding parts of my journey so far

  • I was a collegiate student-athlete and earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management from UIW. I also hold a Master’s degree in Kinesiology and a fitness certification. 
  • My academic and professional journey has equipped me to create engaging learning tools and training resources that promote long-term retention and meaningful application. 
  • I see each interaction as an opportunity to support, encourage, and empower students—helping them overcome academic and personal challenges while planting seeds of confidence, growth, and purpose. 
  • Outside of coaching, I enjoy live music, crafting, participating in fun runs, and strength training. 
  • My personal mission is to do good, speak life, and make a lasting impact.

Student Success Coach - Graduate Assistant

  • I'm a student in UTSA's Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. 
  • I grew up in Worthington, Minnesota, a small town that provided jobs for my parents, both immigrants from northern Mexico. 
  • I completed my Bachelor's at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, just outside of Chicago. I studied Learning Sciences, Latinx Studies, and Civic Engagement. 
  • I moved to San Antonio in 2020 to be closer to family living in Mexico and to escape the harsh winters. 
  • I have worked at a few nonprofits doing research and community outreach and I also taught high school math for two years. 
  • In my spare time, I enjoy spending time in nature and relaxing with family and friends. I try to walk my dogs as much as possible at parks around the city. I enjoy bike riding and baking.

  • I love traveling, music, and meeting new people
  • As a peer coach, I strive to learn more about my campus community and create a safe and encouraging environment for my peers to achieve their goals!

Senior, Biomedical Engineering  

  • My concentration is in tissue and cellular engineering  
  • I'm currently working in Dr. Guda's Tissue grafting research lab. 
  • I serve as Marketing co-chair for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers 
  • I look forward to working alongside fellow students in improving study skills and meeting grade point goals as an Academic Peer Coach!

Senior, Environmental Science, Computer Science 

  • I have worked in several research labs with focuses on terrestrial ecology, geology, and electric vehicles. Also interned at San Antonio Water System! 
  • I'm a part of the honors college, botany club, the butterfly effect, and several other environmental organizations! 
  • I love playing video games, reading, and hanging out with my friends. 
  • As an academic peer coach, I hope to share my knowledge and experiences to those who need help adjusting to university!

  • Was born in Louisiana, but raised in Houston 
  • First generation college student and part of AFROTC program at UTSA  
  • Hobbies include reading, working out, traveling and hanging out with friends 
  • I love music and going to concerts 
  • My favorite movies and TV shows are Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton, The Office, and any comedies. 
  • I am super excited about being an academic peer mentor and helping students achieve academic goals!
