UTSA Alumni Association selects university advocates for annual excellence awards

AUGUST 3, 2023 — The UTSA Alumni Association today announced its 2023 annual award recipients for their service to the university and to future generations of Roadrunners. This year’s Alumni of The Year Award will honor Nancy ’93 ’95 and Andrew Ozuna ’91, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to David Zammiello ’84 and the Distinguished Service Award will posthumously recognize longtime student affairs professional Barry McKinney.

The recipients will be recognized later this month at the UTSA Alumni Association’s annual gala.

“The UTSA Alumni Association has selected four exemplary individuals as its 2023 award recipients. I applaud their success, their work, and their deep commitment to remain engaged members of our Roadrunner family,” said Karl Miller Lugo, UTSA vice president for advancement and alumni engagement. “It is volunteerism and generosity, like theirs, that continues to strengthen the impact of our university on our current students, future graduates, and the entire San Antonio community. Congratulations to these deserving individuals who embody the spirit of UTSA.”

2023 Alumni of The Year: Nancy and Andrew Ozuna

The Ozunas are both graduates of the Carlos Alvarez College of Business. Andrew has served on the college’s Embrey Real Estate Founders Council since 2015 and has served as a guest lecturer. Nancy is a member of the UTSA Development Board, the Alvarez College of Business Advisory Council, and the college’s Accounting Advisory Board. The Ozunas generously support various university groups including the President’s Associates, Roadrunner Athletic Fund, and Alvarez College of Business. In 2015, the couple led the university’s Sombrilla Fountain Renovation Campaign.

Andrew is a senior vice president at Broadway Bank and is an active member of the Rotary Club of San Antonio and the Real Estate Council of San Antonio. Nancy is a partner at FORVIS, LLP a top 10 public accounting firm in the country. She is 2011 graduate of Leadership San Antonio, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), the Texas Society of CPAs, and the San Antonio Chapter of CPAs. While serving on various boards and community organizations throughout San Antonio, the Ozunas continue to volunteer their time to advance UTSA.

“We’re very thankful to the Alumni Association and to the university for being honored. We’ve been able to gain so much from our education and involvement with UTSA,” said Nancy. “We couldn’t be happier to receive this award. UTSA is a great part of San Antonio, there are great students at the university, and we want to make sure that we continue to inspire, mentor, and provide resources to a university that we all love in this city.”

2023 Lifetime Achievement Award: David Zammiello

Following Zammiello’s graduation from the Carlos Alvarez College of Business, he spent 32 years, primarily in executive roles, leading high-performing teams and implementing strategic business plans at USAA. He later served as CEO of Project QUEST, a nationally recognized nonprofit agency that provides individuals access to workforce development resources. He also become an active contributor to San Antonio’s business, education, and non-profit communities. He is a graduate of Leadership San Antonio and the Masters Leadership Program, he previously served on the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is also a distinguished graduate of San Antonio College where he served as an adjunct professor.

Zammiello has always seized opportunities to engage with UTSA. He formerly served on the executive committee of the Alumni Association Board, currently serves on the UTSA Development Board, and remains a longtime supporter of Roadrunners Athletics and is a President’s Associates member. His wife, Cynthia ’86, graduated from the UTSA College of Sciences. Year-round, they attend university events, athletics functions, and pursue opportunities to engage with the university.

“I am honored, humbled, and grateful to the Alumni Association for this recognition. I appreciate and value what UTSA has meant to me and my family. Graduating from UTSA opened doors for professional growth and civic engagement,” said Zammiello. “As an alum, I am proud to be associated with UTSA. I will always show up and contribute in whichever way I can because the work that is going on at the university and for our community is so important and impactful.”

2023 Distinguished Service Award: Barry McKinney (February 12, 1969 - November 28, 2022)

For nearly 20 years, Barry McKinney championed student success at UTSA. In his final role, he served as the associate dean of students and director of student activities. While at UTSA, he developed numerous programs and university traditions that significantly shaped the UTSA student experience, including Homecoming, Día En La Sombrilla, Roadrunner Days, Howdy Rowdy Bash, Midnight Light, BestFest, UTSA Football gamedays and Commencement events. He also helped oversee the UTSA Spirit of the Roadrunner and the University Life Awards, two programs that recognize high student achievement and celebrate individuals who enhance the quality of student life at UTSA.

McKinney is best known for helping UTSA students bring their bold visions to life by removing barriers and serving as their strongest advocate. On November 28, 2022, UTSA mourned the loss of this inspirational leader. The UTSA Alumni Association is recognizing McKinney for his loyalty, service and admirable commitment to UTSA students.

“Barry is the paradigmatic example of a selfless leader. His only goal was furthering students’ agendas—helping to serve a greater vision and pushing students to their capacity. I think he realized that if he could push us, then we could help other people and those people could help others,” said former UTSA Student Government Association President Zack Dunn ’15. “He was a selfless servant leader. It was very clear behind closed doors, in public meetings, during our walks together on campus—his work was always to further a student’s goals or vision.”

The Ozunas, Zammiello and McKinney will be recognized at the 23rd annual UTSA Alumni Gala at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 26 at the La Cantera Resort and Spa. The gala’s leadership includes the Alumni Association Board of Directors, co-chairs Yvonne Addison ’09, ’18 and Yvonne Fernandez ’85, and their new executive director and assistant vice president for alumni engagement, Russell Wagner, who joined the board in February 2023.

Each year, a portion of the Gala’s proceeds go toward the Alumni Association Student Scholarship Fund, which awards $150,000 in scholarships to 40 students on an annual basis. This year’s theme is “2023 & Meep Meep: It’s in Our DNA.” More than 600 spirited alumni are expected to attend
