Welcome to the Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory (EGL) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The EGL is a research unit within the Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Department at the College of Sciences (CoS), UTSA. The EGL started in Spring 2001 from the start-up grant offered to its founding Director, Dr. Dibs Sarkar, then Assistant (now, Associate) Professor of EES. Further expansion was done by the addition of an ICP-MS in 2002.

The EGL-BIOGEOCHEMISTRY Lab was started in 2004 within EGL with the start-up grant offered to it's Associate Director, Dr. Rupali Datta, Assistant Professor of EES.

Equipped with state-of-the art analytical facilities and run by an energetic group of researchers including graduate and undergraduate students and post-doctoral scientists, the EGL promotes research, teaching and outreach activities in environmental quality and remediation, especially addressing local environmental issues in the San Antonio metropolitan area. Our primary research emphasis is on biogeochemical processes regulating the fate of metals, nutrients and organics in soils, sediment, and water. We are also involved in molecular-genetic studies to dissect the mechanism of heavy metal detoxification and phytoremediation in plants.
