Polar Marine Science Seminar

EES 6941-002 (Fall 2008)

This Seminar is a series of lectures and supplemental reading on Polar Marine Science.  The Polar Marine system is defined by the sea ice covers of the Antarctic, Arctic and sub-Arctic seas.  The presence of sea ice and its annual cycle of expansion and retreat defines the basic processes of ocean circulation, atmospheric exchanges, and climates of these regions.  It also has led to the development of uniquely adapted organisms and an ecosystem defined by these physical processes.  The lectures will provide the characteristics of growth, structure and properties of sea ice, geophysics of sea ice, air-ice-ocean interaction and polar marine biology.
