Research at the University of Texas at San AntonioResearch
Research expenditures at The University of Texas at San Antonio increased to more than $48 million in 2007. Expanding research funding goes hand in hand with UTSA' s overall goal to To accomplish these goals, UTSA will continue to develop more doctoral programs, recruit talented faculty and build on a University of Texas System-wide initiative to expand its components research capabilities . Research funding makes an important contribution to the university, complementing the development of new graduate-level programs and the expansion of facilities to house new laboratories and teaching resources. Research enriches academic life at the university, creating an atmosphere where discoveries are made and things are happening. Knowing that their professors are involved in work at the forefront of their fields encourages students to pursue careers and creates excitement for learning. UTSA research is as diverse as its student body. Awards from federal, state and local agencies, as well as private foundations, support a wide range of basic and applied research projects, public service work and training programs. Grants support university research centers and institutes including the social, historical, political and cultural research and empirical and policy studies of the Cultural and Policy Institute that address issues common to metropolitan communities. Some of the funded projects include using mathematical models and computer simulations to study Parkinson's-related diseases, studying the biogeochemistry of contaminated soils and assisting high school teachers to include engineering principles in their math and science curricula. Funding from NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation supports research projects in biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, physics and astronomy, engineering, computer sciences, mathematics and statistics, and the behavioral sciences. At the state and local levels, UTSA received major grants from Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texas Education Agency and, to increase the use of technology across the region, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF). Locally, the university received funding for projects from the San Antonio Area Foundation and the City of San Antonio, to name only a few. Last modified Feb. 1, 2008 |
