Faculty and staff invited to March 23 UTSA vendor fair

The UTSA Office of Materials Management hosts Vendor Fair 2005 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 23 at the Recreation Center, 1604 Campus. Faculty and staff members are invited to meet nearly 80 vendors and potential vendors of UTSA including suppliers of office products, biomedical materials, furniture, printing services, specialty/promotional products and tool/industrial products. Reserved parking is available in lot 5. Door prizes will be given throughout the event.

Student Health Services hosts Diabetes Alert Days March 22-23

UTSA Student Health Services hosts Diabetes Alert Days from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, March 22 at the Downtown Campus Frio Street Building commons and from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, March 23 at the 1604 Campus University Center second floor atrium. Free blood glucose screenings by Gonzaba Medical Group and educational information will be provided. For more accurate test results, drink only water and fast 8 hours prior to the screening. Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot properly process sugar (or blood glucose). Complications of uncontrolled diabetes include blindness and loss of limbs.

Benefits office offers retirement information sessions in April

Because of high interest in retirement information, the benefits office has scheduled several information sessions in April presented by UTSA retirement plan vendors. If you have questions about your retirement goals, plan to attend. Registration is required; lunch will be provided. Enroll in SD 243 through TXClass.

It's time for annual online compliance training!

The Office of Institutional Compliance is currently assigning Training Post modules to benefits-eligible staff and administrators (non-faculty titles) for annual refresher compliance training. Employees will be given instructions via e-mail or letter when their modules are assigned. You are required to complete the seven modules by April 30. Faculty refresher training is in the fall semester and new employee training is ongoing. Supervisors can view the status of training for staff members in the "Report by Group" function of the Training Post.

Attention faculty: summer and fall book orders are due March 25

Textbook orders for the summer and fall sessions are due March 25. Meeting the deadline helps ensure books are available when the students need them. Submit orders to your department administrative assistant or the UTSA Bookstore.

Mary Miller presents dissertation defense March 23

Mary Miller, candidate for the doctor of education degree in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS), will defend her dissertation, "Accounting for Student and School Success in High Poverty, High Minority Schools: A Constructivist Approach," at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 23 in the ELPS conference room, Main Building Room 3.310B. Committee members are Raymond Padilla (chair), Betty Merchant, Page Smith and Paul West Meyer.

 

Texas Folklife Festival recruits volunteers

If you like food, learning about different cultures and helping others, the Texas Folklife Festival invites you, your co-workers and members of civic organizations to volunteer time to support San Antonio's annual four-day cultural celebration June 9-12 at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Volunteers are needed for a variety of assignments including working at the festival gates, souvenir sales booth, information center and more. Average shifts are 3 to 4 hours with varying starting times. Those who volunteer attend an overview orientation prior to the festival and receive a wristband good for admission all four days.

UTDirect has a new look

Employees who recently activated an EID and utilized UTDirect for personal information will notice changes that were made March 14. Although the functions of the site are unaltered, the number of graphics was reduced -- which translates into less strain on servers and improved performance on the site.

Sign up now for budget training classes

Staff members in departments that use the electronic BDL document in DEFINE to create the 2005-2006 budget can enroll now in two training classes. Every department that prepares budgets should send at least one representative to the classes. Part I covers budget guidelines, policies and schedules. Part II is a refresher class and also for those preparing the BDL for the first time.
