Mayoral candidates debate at Downtown Campus April 18Mayoral candidates Julian Castro, Phil Hardberger and Carroll Schubert will debate at UTSA from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 18 at the Buena Vista Theatre (1.326), Downtown Campus. The hour-long debate, sponsored by the UTSA Student Government Association, will feature both moderated and audience questions, as well as several pre-recorded inquiries from UTSA students. Monday's debate marks the second time the trio has debated at UTSA, having met at the 1604 Campus earlier this spring. The debate is free and open to all.
UTSA hosts early-voting site April 20-May 3The UTSA Student Government Association (SGA) hosts an early-voting site at the Main Building ground floor lobby, 1604 Campus, from April 20 to May 3. Voting is for the Joint General and Special Election for the City of San Antonio and Northside Independent School District, which includes the City Council and mayor races. Early voting at UTSA is open to all San Antonio registered voters, regardless of the precinct in which they reside. Designation as an early-voting site promotes civic awareness in the UTSA community and provides a convenient voting location for UTSA faculty, staff and students. Remember to vote! Annual online compliance training deadline approachesThe Office of Institutional Compliance reminds benefits-eligible staff and administrators (non-faculty titles) that the April 30 deadline to complete annual compliance training is approaching. Employees were notified via e-mail or letter and given instructions when their modules were assigned. The seven modules must be completed by April 30. Faculty refresher training is in the fall semester and new employee training is ongoing. Supervisors can view the status of training for staff members in the "Report by Group" function of the Training Post. More information: Kelli Leatherwood, 458-4992
Remind students of April 19-20 SGA electionThe UTSA student government election is April 19-20. Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind students that voting is online via ASAP starting at 12:01 a.m., Tuesday, April 19 and ending at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, April 20. Visitor centers offer tours at 1604 and Downtown campusesThe UTSA Visitor Center, Business Building Room 1.04.04, offers individual tours of the 1604 Campus at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday-Friday. Reservations are not accepted, but "tourists" should assemble 10 minutes before the tours begin. Tours of the Downtown Campus can be arranged by calling Nancy at the Downtown Campus Office of Admissions/Visitor Center at 458-2000. UTSA PD hires Access Control Center employeesThe UTSA Police Department announces the hiring of two new Access Control Center employees, Brandy Menard and Michael Steabman. Both have experience in the access-control industry, which will help the center provide more efficient services for the UTSA community. Access Control issues door keys, re-keys doors and manages door access using the UTSACard. Welcome Brandy and Michael!
New sales tax rate effective April 1UTSA offices that charge sales tax should be using the new San Antonio rate. Effective April 1, the San Antonio sales tax went from 7.75 percent to 8 percent. Tech support activates Windows firewallUTSA Technology Support Services (TSS) enabled the firewall feature for Windows XP users April 6. A firewall blocks attempts to access individual personal computers by other computers. Read the full story on UTSA Today. More information: Help Desk, 458-5538
Mac users group hosts Apple tech update event April 20The UTSA Macintosh Activity eXchange (MAX) will host "Apple Tech Update" 9-11 a.m., Wednesday, April 20 in the John Peace Library Building Assembly Room (4.03.08), 1604 Campus. The seminar will feature a preview of Mac OS X version 10.4 (Tiger), the Mac Mini, the new dual 2.3 GHz Xserve G5, the Xserve RAID and a Q&A session. The presenter is Dreux Ste. Marie, Apple Computer senior systems engineer. Registered attendees will be entered in a drawing for an iPod Shuffle. You must be present to win. Some pay phones removed because of low usageSBC Communications, which provides UTSA pay phones, is removing some of the devices because of low usage. SBC standards require pay phones to generate at least $2 per day in revenue to remain active. Over the next several weeks, SBC will remove 15 of 23 pay phones at the 1604 Campus and five of seven from the Downtown Campus. To accommodate those who are hearing-impaired, most remaining pay phone locations will have a telecommunication device for the deaf (TDD). Read the full story on UTSA Today.
