UTSA provost named UMKC chancellorGuy Bailey, UTSA provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, has been named chancellor of the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC). A professor of English, classics and philosophy, he has served as provost at UTSA since 1998. Bailey assumes his new post Jan. 1, 2006. "Guy Bailey is an outstanding scholar, teacher and administrator," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "As provost, he helped shape UTSA as one of the next premier research universities serving Texas. He understands the complex role of a university in the community as a center of excellence in education, research and community service." During Bailey's tenure at UTSA, more than 10 doctoral programs have been created, external funding for research has more than doubled and total enrollment has increased from 18,000 students to more than 26,000 students. Campus Recreation opens Downtown Campus facilities Aug. 1UTSA Campus Recreation will open a new Downtown Campus fitness facility Aug. 1 in Durango Building Rooms 3.302 and 3.202 for use by UTSA community members. The fitness room is equipped with the latest fitness machines. The facilities will include a weight and cardio room, fitness assessments, group exercise, massage therapy, demo kitchens, and Women on Weights and Nutrition 101 classes. Playing field construction brings road closures at 1604 CampusConstruction has begun at the 1604 Campus on three new playing fields for intramural and club sports. Parking permits: Last chance to order and receive by mailUTSA students, faculty and staff must order UTSA parking permits for 2005-2006 by July 31 in order to receive a permit by mail. Permits must be ordered online through the ASAP information system, whether payment is by cash, payroll deduction, financial aid or credit card. Volunteers are needed to welcome new RoadrunnersThe UTSA Office of Housing and Residence Life needs volunteers to help welcome new Roadrunners coming to UTSA in August. Faculty, staff and students are needed to help students move into their new homes at Chaparral Village, Chisholm Hall and University Oaks Apartments. The official move-in date for the three housing complexes is Saturday, Aug. 20. Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Aug. 19-20. Refreshments will be provided. UTSA hosts Aug. 1 blood drive at Downtown CampusUTSA students, faculty and staff are encouraged to donate blood from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 1 in the Frio Street Building Multipurpose Room (1.402), Downtown Campus. There is a critical shortage of blood at area medical facilities, and your blood donation is needed. Donors must bring photo identification. Each donor will receive a free T-shirt. UTSA Bowling Night Aug. 15 to raise women's scholarship fundsTeams from the UTSA Office of Business Affairs and the Office of the Registrar will host the second annual UTSA Bowling Night fund-raiser at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15 at the University Bowl bowling alley, I-10 at DeZavala. The event, open to the UTSA community, will include a silent auction and door prizes. Open to UTSA faculty, staff, students and friends, two games of bowling plus shoe rental is $14. Profits benefit the Walk For Women's Athletics, Oct. 29, which supports scholarships for women athletes. Participants can register in teams of five or register individually and be placed on a team. UTSA golf tournament to raise funds for UTSA Women's WalkUTSA staff members are organizing a golf tournament to raise funds for the UTSA Walk for Women's Athletics. Proceeds benefit women's athletics scholarships. The golf tournament tee-off is 8 a.m., Aug. 20 at the Pecan Valley Golf Club, 4700 Pecan Valley Drive. Participants must check in at the clubhouse at 7:15 a.m. There will be "goody" bags for participants, prize drawings and prizes for first- and second-place teams, the longest drive and the ball closest to the pin.
