NASA hero is keynote speaker at July 29 PREP ceremony

Ed Smylie, retired NASA engineer and crew system division chief, is the keynote speaker at the San Antonio Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP) closing ceremony. The ceremony, free and open to the public, is 1 p.m., Friday, July 29 in the UTSA Convocation Center, 1604 Campus. More than 1,300 area children participated this summer in the program.

In 1970, Smylie led a group of engineers who helped bring the three Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to earth, after an astronaut spoke the famous words, "Houston, we have a problem." The engineers devised modifications to the failing air system, saving the lives of the astronauts. Smylie agreed to speak at the ceremonies at the suggestion of his daughter, Susan, whose 12-year-old son, Samuel Schmidt, is a member of this summer's PREP class.
