UTSA programs: Focus on safety and securitySince the Feb. 19 disappearance of UTSA student Naomi Fuentes, personal safety and security has been on the minds of many in the UTSA community. CRIME STOPPERS offers reward for Naomi Fuentes informationUTSA announced this week a partnership with CRIME STOPPERS of San Antonio. David Hernandez, UTSA chief of police, said CRIME STOPPERS has offered up to $5,000 for information that leads to the resolution of the Naomi Fuentes missing person case. HOP policy updatedA new policy has been added to the UTSA Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP): 2.7 "Part-time Appointment for Tenured Faculty" was drafted for tenured faculty who no longer wish to perform teaching and research duties on a full-time basis. Tenured, tenure-track faculty asked to submit SCORE grantsThe UTSA Minority Biomedical Research Support of Continuous Research Excellence (MBRS-SCORE) program is soliciting grant requests from tenured and tenure-track UTSA faculty members for submission to the National Institute of Health. Faculty, staff invited to March 24 summit on graduation ratesFaculty and staff members are invited to attend the UTSA Summit on Increasing Student Success and Graduation Rates on Friday, March 24 at the 1604 Campus. The keynote speaker is Raymund Paredes, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board commissioner. The half-day summit will provide an opportunity to learn about factors that influence student success, strategies used to promote student success, and resources available to support students and faculty as efforts are stepped up to increase graduation rates. There will be sessions on graduation rates research, faculty development, academic support programs, advising, teaching and diversity. VOICES seeks Spring Break advisersVolunteers are needed as advisers for the VOICES alternative spring break program that goes to New Orleans this year. Each spring, the student organization VOICES (Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education and Service) offers students the program. Students have a chance to improve others' lives through volunteer service. A group that will work with Habitat for Humanity to help with the hurricane aftermath will leave March 11 and return March 18. Accommodations will be minimal (i.e. tents, port-a-potties). Tax help available for some UTSA employeesThe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available to UTSA employees and their families who make less than $40,000. VITA helps individuals prepare and file their tax returns free of charge. The goal of the program is to help more eligible families receive the tax credits they deserve. SBDC offers free online learning for small businessesThe South-West Texas Border Region SBDC now offers free online learning for small businesses that cover business plans, maintaining finances, starting a business and creating Web sites. Employees can report unethical activities on hotlineUTSA employees can call a toll-free hotline to report issues of suspected non-compliance or unethical activity. Serviced by an independent company called The Network, the hotline number is 877-888-0002. Interviewers who speak English or Spanish are available all day everyday.When possible, employees should use normal administrative channels to address concerns or report issues of suspected non-compliance. This service is not intended as a substitute for speaking directly with management, but is an option when you want to help but prefer to be anonymous.
