UTSA Fall Convocation kicks off new year

The UTSA Fall Convocation 2008 will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 25 in the Recreation Center gymnasium on the 1604 Campus. This year's theme is "Your Journey Begins..." with UTSA President Ricardo Romo as the keynote speaker. The event is free and open to UTSA students, faculty, staff and friends.

Faculty and staff marching in the procession are invited to attend a pre-event breakfast in the Recreation Center upstairs studios at 8:30 a.m. Seats for the free breakfast must be reserved by Thursday, Aug. 21 by e-mailing engaged@utsa.edu or calling 458-4770.

Marchers will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Recreation Center second floor corridor. Those marching are encouraged to wear academic regalia, but may wear university colors -- orange, white and blue. Read more on UTSA Today.

 

QEP committee announces pre-proposal finalists

The UTSA Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Committee announces three pre-proposal finalists, which were selected from 14 submissions. The QEP is part of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) Reaffirmation 2010 process which began last spring.

HOP employee policies are updated

Several policies were added or updated in the UTSA Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP). Periodic HOP updates will be announced in @UTSA.

Policy 3.3 "Discipline and Dismissal of Classified Employees" was updated to comply with Regents' Rules and Regulations. Policy 4.29 "Hours of Work and Breaks for Staff (Non-Faculty) Employees" was updated to include sections on meal breaks (lunch) and rest period (breaks). A new policy was added, 3.6 "Probationary Period for Classified Employees," which provides procedures and guidelines concerning the probationary period of classified employees. Finally, policy 4.20 "Authorized Leave" was updated to clarify disposition of vacation balances when an employee separates from state employment.

Shift careers with accelerated teacher training program

There will be an information session on UTSA's Accelerated Teacher Education Program (A-TEP) from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28 in Buena Vista Street Building Room 1.322 at the UTSA Downtown Campus. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, A-TEP is a comprehensive teacher-preparation program offering certification in mathematics, science and special education. Read more on UTSA Today.

Child Development Center provides UTSA child care

The UTSA Child Development Center provides child care services for UTSA students, staff and faculty. The center is licensed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children and is a Child Care Delivery Services vendor. Student Health Services HIV newsletter available now

The latest edition of HIV News is available for download at the UTSA Student Health Services Web site. Current and past issues are downloadable in PDF format with stories including "A Nutritional Look at HIV," "The Epidemic: The 21st Century," "HIV Testing Clinic Dates" and "Community Highlights."

Office of Central Services general stores will be closed Aug. 25-29 for year-end procedures. Department and office staff members are asked to plan accordingly.
