Five- and seven-year-olds needed for research study

UTSA psychology professor Brenda Hannon, in collaboration with her graduate student Sarah Frias, is conducting research that examines the cognitive processes used by children just starting to read (five-year-olds) and beginning readers (seven-year-olds). The participants will play a number of new theoretically motivated, interactive games that are auditory and visual in nature. The research will be of interest to theorists, educators and parents because it is a new measure that captures individual differences in the higher-level processes strongly implicated in reading before a child can read. If it works, an important outcome of the research will be identification of potential reading problems before they happen. The research is funded by the Department of Psychology and Hannon's F&A monies.

The researchers need five-year old, English-speaking children and seven-year-old, English-speaking children. The study takes approximately two to two and a half hours to complete; the current participants are enjoying it. Each child will receive a $10 toy package as a thank-you for study participation, while parents will receive a $12 Barnes and Noble gift card for their time and effort. Parents must accompany their children to the study. To participate, e-mail your name and phone number to brenda.hannon@utsa.edu.
