Faculty Recognition Award
Dr. Jolyn Mikow has excelled in the areas of research, teaching, and service. She has been the Principal Investigator (PI) for research projects that have generated $225,000 in external funds. Her research is primarily focused on the prevention paradigm as it relates to child abuse and neglect. Dr. Mikow’s grant from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is specifically highlighted as she was once an employee of the department. Her past experience has provided her the opportunity to give back to the community by incorporating community-based research into social work practice. Various community agencies have turned to her for research and program evaluation. She has assisted in finding instruments, advised on data analysis, and consulted on the selection of variables that would assist their program evaluation activities.
Her use of technology lead to the creation and implementation of social work’s first online research class. Dr. Mikow serves as a mentor for students, helping thembecome comfortable with research and moves them toward competence, excitement, and a commitment to research.
Dr. Mikow completed major service responsibilities in the development and accreditation of the UTSA MSW program. She conceptualized the program evaluation plan, oversaw the analysis of data, and authored the final report that informed the Self-Study for Initial Accreditation. She also serves on eight different committees on the departmental, college, and university level. She is an active member of NASW and a volunteer for the Diversity Center of San Antonio.
