Physics master’s, Ph.D. approved

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved UTSA’s new master’s and doctoral degrees in physics. The programs will be a partnership with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), a leading nonprofit research and development organization specializing in the creation and transfer of technology in the physical sciences and engineering.

Eight scientists from SwRI’s Space Science and Engineering Division will serve as “adjoint” professors for the Department of Physics and Astronomy when the program begins in the fall of 2005. They will develop and teach some of the graduate courses and supervise students; UTSA grad students will also conduct research in SwRI laboratories.

The program will include a 30 credit-hour master of science degree as well as a doctoral degree with 45 credit hours of coursework and 36 credit hours of research with a dissertation.

Margaret Batts Tobin Laboratory Building opens on west campus

The $10.6 million Margaret Batts Tobin Laboratory Building was officially opened Monday, November 14. The 22,000 square-foot facility will house numerous biology labs, a computer media center, and UTSA’s second Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. New faculty members Garry Cole, Jose L. Lopez-Ribot, Judy M. Teale, and Floyd L. Wormley, Jr., who are part of the UTSA focus on emerging infectious diseases research, will be among the first to take advantage of the new space.

Joint UTSA/UTHSCSA neuroscience program kicked off December 9

ohn Maunsell in the department of Neuroscience at Baylor University presented a seminar on Friday, December 9 to inaugurate the new joint UTSA/UTHSCSA Neuroscience Program. The program, funded initially through a grant from the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute, will enhance neuroscience research and training between the two institutions by integrating curriculum and scholarly activities. Participation is open to all Ph.D. students in both institutions with research interest in neuroscience. The December 9 seminar was the first in a series; the program also features stipend support, monthly laboratory research presentations, and an annual retreat.
