Your support made UTSA Family Weekend 2016 a tremendous success. Friday featured campus tours, free access to The Rec, and the inaugural Family Weekend Kickoff Dinner in the Sombrilla (which sold out well in advance!), where we announced the 2016 UTSA Family of the Year and the latest Family Association Scholarship Recipients. Saturday brought more Roadrunner Nation excitement as families enjoyed the Alumni Association Tailgate, the Spirit Walk, and a thrilling UTSA Roadrunner Football game victory.
I understand what it takes to be the parent of a college student: I have had the privilege of witnessing my two children complete degrees from UTSA. So I know firsthand what The Family Association needs to provide:
Events like this one, the Family Connection newsletter, the Roadrunner Road Trips, and giving opportunities like the Family Fund - they are all part of this mission.
We invite you to attend events, volunteer, and stay in touch, because The Family Association plays a huge role in the institution's path to more and more academic recognitions.
The UTSA Family of the Year is a family who exudes UTSA spirit, pride and tradition, and are a true representation of a Roadrunner Family. The family is nominated by their student.
Congratulations to the Thompson Family of Houston, Texas, for being named UTSA Family of the Year by The UTSA Family Association!
Excerpted from Trae Thompson's winning essay submission —
My family is a major part of my desire to strive for excellence, not perfection. They know that I will encounter some obstacles and failures, but I know I can count on them to support me no matter what happens. They all give me the confidence to go after my dreams and have fun doing it. I plan on making every moment count while I am on this new journey as a college student.
Every sacrifice that my family continues to make and all of their support is totally appreciated. I have no doubt that my family will proudly represent UTSA with spirit, pride, and respect our school deserves. I would be an honor to win the contest for the UTSA Family of the Year. I guarantee you, though, that whether we win or not, my family will still always represent UTSA just as if we had won.
