A message from Associate Director of Orientation and Family Programs - Jeff Mayo

Dr. Gage E Paine

Commencement ceremonies this week will mark the culmination of years of hard work by our graduates and recognize the support these students received from their loved ones. Families, friends, faculty, and staff will fill the Convocation Center to celebrate with graduates on a day that marks the end of their time as students at UTSA. However, as the ceremony's title indicates, a commencement notes the beginning of a journey, not the end. Although this is a great time to look back on their time at UTSA, it is also a time for our graduates and current Roadrunners to look to their futures with passion, determination, and creativity.

Your students are paving bright paths for their futures every day. In their participation in organizations such as Engineers Without Borders and the Clinton Global Initiative, UTSA students are collaborating with professionals and students from around the world to create innovative solutions to real world issues. Roadrunners are making a difference in the San Antonio community by building homes, designing and constructing parks, and logging countless hours of community service. Even though we attempt to share many of these projects with families through this newsletter and via Facebook, we can never share enough of your students' accomplishments or ambitions.

It is the daily exposure to their enthusiasm and commitment that causes those of us on campus to eagerly anticipate what is to come from this year's graduates. As we watch these students walk across the stage at commencement ceremonies this week, we know it is the beginning, not the end, of an exciting chapter in their lives.

Congratulations to all of our graduates and their families.

Jeff Mayo
Associate Director of Orientation and Family Programs

Career Closet Helps Roadrunners Land Jobs

The UTSA Family Association makes a difference in the lives of Roadrunners each and every day on campus through the programs and services made possible by the Family Fund. One such program is the University Career Center's Career Closet, which lends suits to students for meetings with employers and job interviews. Family Association Updates

new family association site

As summer approaches, the UTSA community is gearing up to welcome the Class of 2016 to campus. However, we also understand and appreciate the support that families provide their students, especially during those first months on campus. To help parents prepare for this time of transition, we will host 2,000 family members for their own orientation to UTSA and college life this summer. We will prepare parents for that first phone call from their students who need to know where to find an office, where to go for help on an essay, or who to call if they are looking for the perfect fit in a student organization. We will also prepare them for that long drive home after helping their students move in to their home away from home.

This is where you come in. If you have any advice for a parent going through this process for the first time, please send it my way (jeff.mayo@utsa.edu). As much as UTSA faculty and staff can help educate family members, it is the advice from current Roadrunner parents that will mean the most when August arrives.

For those of you with students returning home for the summer, I hope you take advantage of your time together as a family. Once your students emerge from their post-finalshibernation, they will appreciate the love and support I am sure you will provide.
